Meet Our Coaches

“Good players want to be coached… Great players want to be told the truth” – Doc Rivers

Longjohn

Coach

Coach Longjohn will be coaching his sixth year with the Long Island Heat. He is a graduate of Stony Brook University with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He also will earn a Master’s Degree in Adolescent Education from Long Island University in May 2017.

Coach Longjohn has 8 years of experience coaching at the high school and middle school level. Along with the Long Island Heat, he has coached at Central Islip High School, Ralph J Reed Middle School, and is now coaching at Longwood Junior High School. He currently teaches at Longwood High School.

Coach Longjohn’s coaching philosophy begins with establishing a foundation of values and culture of brotherhood among his student athletes. He uses his insight to draw on what motivates his athletes and enact working-goals that build individual skills and self-confidence. The best way to put athletes in position to succeed, is by reinforcing hard-work ethics, broadening their understanding of the game, and refining their ability to apply the full extent of their talents in competitive situations.

Coach Longjohn specializes in training ball-handling, on-ball defense, ambidexterity, and core strength.

Paul McKenzie

Coach

While attending Herkimer College, I acted as a student assistant for the men’s basketball team. I have been coaching for the past 6 yrs on the the AAU circuit. My philosophy for coaching, aside from a genuine love for the sport, is to be able to instill and influence youth towards greater success, not only in sports, but in life!

Charles Obijuru

Coach

I am a graduate of SUNY Stony Brook University. I began coaching in 2016. I believe that hard work will always prevail over talent. An emphasis on selflessness, with a devotion to playing strong defense, will produce positive results for the team. “Hand down, man down!"

Nasheed Dixon

Coach

I am currently attending SUNY Sullivan and am the active captain of the Generals men's basketball team. "What makes me unique is my ability to understand the players on the court since I am also currently playing college basketball. I believe I understand the process of developing different skills." I have been coaching for LI Heat Basketball program for the last two years. My philosophy is, "Work hard on and off the court, learn from every workout, practice or game and give it your all!”
